PlatypusWatch
The survey has been an ongoing initiative to monitor platypus populations and habitat conditions in the Upper Condamine River.
Starting in September 2021, dedicated volunteers have participated in 6-monthly surveys. These contribute to a growing evidence base that informs conservation efforts and land management strategies.
Overseen by platypus expert Dr Tamielle Brunt, the project is an important part of wider monitoring by Wildlife Queensland.
The surveys have shown we currently have a healthy population of platypuses.
There are as many as 2 platypuses per kilometre in the 14km stretch of the Condamine River between Double Crossing and the Ellen Backhouse Bridge in town.
Over 60% of the surveyed areas of river sustain high-quality habitat for platypus.
